Protecting the Bamboo
We found that it is best to install the bamboo and then wait 3-4 weeks before coating. Any bamboo products coming out of Asia are coated with a product that is not UV rated. This coating disintegrates within a few weeks therefore it is important to coat the bamboo with a UV rated coating. We found that decking oil (Oil Based) works great and is easy to apply. You can spray or use a wide brush (approx 8cm wide). To protect the natural colour use a clear coating. You can also get tinted decking oil such as Merbau, Jarrah etc…(Please refer to tin for application instructions and manufacturers website, also found on tin, for more information). You don’t need to sand the bamboo as this removes the texture. You can use most external decking oils such as Sikkens, Feast Watson, Wattyl, etc……
Cabot’s Natural Decking Oil – Oil Based .We use the Merbau colour at our display. Merbau used in below photo.
Ideally you want to coat the bamboo before it gets this grey. Coat once a year or as needed.
Intergrain Ultra Deck Timber Stain (Water Based), formerly called Intergrain Natural Stain – Colour is called “Rich Chocolate”, this is a Dark Brown bamboo colour, great for if your bamboo has gone grey. Show Bunnings the photo of the label and they will mix the colour for you.
Bottom photo, totally faded colour was made brown. You don’t lose texture with this product.
